- bettie page:
Bettie Page, as an icon, completely fulfills my concept of the ideal woman. Physically she has perfect attributes – she’s womanly in all the right places, and utterly beautiful in features and poise. But from what I understand (of course having never met her), she is also a very forthright, passionate, and thoughtful person, which makes her even more special in my eyes. I would consider myself the most gifted person on the planet if I ever met and got involved with a woman like her.
- clive barker:
Clive Barker is who I’d like to be when I grow up. I’ve enjoyed 90% of his works, and his works range from novels to plays to movies to art (as paintings and comics). His Abarat novels are a kind of “dark Harry Potter” except they’re really awesomely fantastical and imaginative, and the protagonist is a realistic and likeable heroine. Much more Alice in Wonderland than Harry Potter really. It’s also illustrated by his own oil paintings, which is wonderful.
Does this interest really exist?Okay fine, I’m copping out. I don’t want to go into a treatise on my materialist existential beliefs.
Games are another passion of mine. I really enjoy games of all kinds: board games, miniatures games, card games, role-playing games, computer and video games. I am always looking for people who will play games with me; it seems like I’ve been looking for people to game with my whole life!
- jae lee:
Jae Lee is a comic artist whose work I have enjoyed greatly in the last 15 years. He has a very dark, dynamic hard-line style, almost Sam Keith-like artwork. My favorite work of his was his recent collaboration with Grant Morrison on a Fantastic Four mini-series… great, classic stuff.
I love getting massages. I love giving massages, and I’m told that I’m quite good even without any formal training. I’m a very physical person – I enjoy touching people and being touched. Some people might call that “clingy,” but more often than not, I’ve found that those people usually don’t ever want to be touched at all.
If you know me at all, you know that I am forever on a quest to find the perfect pizza. At one time I believed that I could possibly create the perfect pizza myself; but I know the truth now. I know that I will never create a pizza better than DiFara’s on Avenue J in Brooklyn. Domenic DeMarco is my patron saint.
- science fiction:
Science fiction really gets a bad rap, doesn’t it? But you know what really kills me is how often the fiction turns into fact, sometimes without people even recognizing it. Who living 100 years ago have thought we’d have cell phones and iPods and space travel and nuclear reactors? 100 years isn’t that long a time either, we’re talking going from freaking Gangs of New York to atomic bombs here… that’s science fiction for you.
- the polyphonic spree:
I became aware of the Spree’s music with that dumb Volkswagen commercial, but did not know quite who they were. Catchy tune, I thought. Then I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and was very turned on to them. They have this really excellent web site, and this cool little Flash puzzle game called “The Quest for the Rest” that I enjoyed immensely.
Wikipedia, and at a larger level, the Wikimedia Foundation, offers a very tantalizing promise. Encompassing the sum of all human knowledge is a noble and vital goal, and I really want it to happen. I see it as the first step in lifting the human race out of its state of miserable ignorance – the second step being the creation of instant, free access to that knowledge. I forsee a day when everyone is carrying around a device that can give them whatever information they need whenever they need it, no matter where they are. I’m not sure if Wikimedia will deliver on this promise, but I am very impressed by what they’ve done so far. I recommend that everyone reading this sign up for an account at one or more Wikimedia sites and participate.
